Leaking P-Trap Found During a Winnipeg Home Inspection

During a recent home inspection in the Winnipeg area, a plumbing issue was discovered under the kitchen sink. The P-trap connection was actively leaking, allowing water to drip onto the cabinet base.

The P-trap is an important part of the plumbing system. It holds a small amount of water that prevents sewer gases from entering the home while also directing wastewater from the sink into the drain line. When these fittings become loose, worn, or improperly sealed, leaks can occur.

In this case, another concern was also present: there were no water shut-off valves installed for the sink supply lines. Shut-off valves allow homeowners to quickly stop water flow if a leak or plumbing issue occurs. Without them, the water must usually be shut off at the main supply line, which can be inconvenient and slow during an emergency.

Why This Matters

Small plumbing leaks like this can lead to:

  • Cabinet damage

  • Mold or moisture buildup

  • Hidden water damage over time

Recommended Action

A qualified plumber should repair the leaking P-trap connection and consider installing proper shut-off valves for the sink supply lines to improve safety and maintenance accessibility.

Issues like this are exactly why a thorough home inspection is important. Catching smaller problems early can help prevent larger and more expensive repairs later.
